The iconic Putnam’s storefront announces the news to Main Street: “Retirement Sale.”
Dick Putnam has owned the Main Street staple since 1977 – but he, and the store, have been fixtures on the street much, much longer than that.
“I like to say I’ve spent pretty much 73 of my 75 years on the premises,” Putnam joked. “My parents used to curl me up between the pants for my nap.”
Putnam’s, an apparel, dry cleaning and tailoring shop, has been on Main Street since 1934. The store started its life in another location as W.H. Emerson’s, but was bought by Putnam’s great uncle, Charles Putnam, who had been involved with the business for years at that point.

With its usual Town Meeting scheduled for June, the town of Wilton has scheduled a Special Town Meeting for later this month to address a single issue – allowing the Select Board to use capital reserve funds to repair or replace the heating system at the Town Hall.
The Special Town Meeting is scheduled for April 19 at 5:30 p.m., at the Main Street Association Park, located on Main Street between Frost This Bakery and Nelson’s Candy.
The meeting will address a single question, which would give the Select Board the authority to expend from the town’s Heating System Capital Reserve Fund without requiring approval from a vote of Town Meeting.
