As Kildare prepares to host a memorial for seven Republicans executed in 1922 following secret trials, the opportunity for the next Taoiseach to make a public apology should not be squandered
Dick Barrett, Joe McKelvey, Liam Mellows and Rory O’Connor were shot the next day, Dec. 8, 1922, at 8 a.m., explicitly as a reprisal for Sean Hales’s death, and as a warning.
Galway republicans will remember and commemorate Liam Mellows on 4 December, in Athenry. This Galway Sinn Féin event will commence with a march from Athenry Community Park at 2pm by a piper-led pro.
Today we are highlighting the careers of two men, both of whom were elected as TDs for Galway in 1918, both of whom fought on the same side in the Rising and the War of Independence and then, sadly, took different sides after the Treaty.
