A bill heads to congress a controversial combination of farm subsidies and food stamps. We start in kiev. Thousands packed Independence Square calling for Viktor Yanukovych to step down. They called for constitutional changes. The announcement that Viktor Yanukovych will be back comes amid an activist Dmytro Bulatov claiming he was beaten. Heading to the runway, Dmytro Bulatov free at last from torrmentors and arrest. He said his kidnappers nailed him to a door, mutilated him with knives for days. Hell receive treatment in lithuania, safely inside the european union. Translation i think we just saved his life. After what they wanted to do to m, arrest him, put him in prison i think we saved his life. We will not leave anybody without our attention. This may seem like a concession by Viktor Yanukovych yet another one. In a Police Station investigation was launched it might reveal too much about shadowy organizations. Earlier in the day in kievs Independence Square, tens of thousands of
Away, which will mean literally thousands of dollars in the pockets of many seniors. I would suggest to our colleagues in the house and the minority of the minority here in the senate who want to shut things down because they have not gotten their way on Health Reform, that it would be so much better for the American People if they chose the path that we did on medicare prescription drugs, which is to try to make it work the best that we can and then to look for ways to make it better. So instead of doing that, what we have is a situation where we are being held hostage, Public Services are being held hostage to eliminate something that frankly that the majority of people already voted to say they wanted to put into place, fix it, yes. Their problems, yes, fix it. But they certainly dont want to go back to hundreds of dollars a month for a family for a policy that covers almost nothing, which is what has happened all across michigan and all across the country, a situation where women g
When you go around, and this is a reality in delaware as well as rhode island. You ask about the state department. Its trillions of dollars a year when in fact its a very small fraction. Now theyre beginning thoint that no, this is about something more fundamental. This is about the basic social contract that people have worked all their lives, paid into Social Security, will get Social Security benefits. This is about the social contract that if youve worked, youve paid into the medicare system, youll get medicare benefits. So now the storys shifted totally and now its all about negotiations, that we have not negotiated. Thats why they have to shut the government down and default on the debt of the United States. And the irony, of course, is that we have been indeed trying to go to serious negotiations about a budget for many, many months. Indeed, months ago, in march, as i recall, the senate, after taking 47 roll call votes, passed a solid, passed and sensible budget and asked to neg
Diplomatic solution that is the preferred solution. Im very cleareyed about the iranian threat. Not only the Nuclear Threat ask not only the history of past events, but current events. Human Rights Violations have been mentioned and a history of and current practices that are bellicose and destabilizing of other governments in the region and beyond. And it is the case that the sanctions that congress has put in place in so many i have not been part of that legislation. I came here after the legislation was passed, but i can praise those who have been here for putting tough sanctions in place, the vote in 2011 was 1000 in this body, and the administration has been able to utilize sanctions to bring iran to the table because it has crippled their economy and isolated them in the international community. But sanctions are not enough to stop an Iranian Nuclear program. And the one thing that i think you would say if you looked at the history is that the sanctions have crippled the economy.
And expectation is everybody has learned that theres no reason why we cant work on the issues at hand. So hopefully thats a lesson that will be internalized and not just by me but also by democrats and republicans not only the leaders but the rankandfile. Thanks very much, everybody. Mr. President , will this happen all over again in a few months . Well for the first time in 17 days the federal government is up and running this morning, a final congressional vote last night, capped an ugly drama on capitol hill where partisan politics drove the nations economy into the very brink. In the end lawmakers avoided defaulting on the federal debt but nevertheless theres plenty of damage to go around. 87 House Republicans joined democrats in supporting legislation to fund the government into early next year while raising the debt ceiling to cover whats already been spent. Not a single democrat opposed it. On the senate side 18 republicans opposed the bill among them ted cruz, mike lee, rand pa
