Wednesday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced $765 million in funding for Florida’s teachers is on the way, including $1,000 payments directly to most principals and teachers.
Over 3,600 principals and almost 180,000 full-time classroom teachers in grades pre-K through 12th will receive the $1,000 disaster relief payments for a total of $215 million in the state budget, the governor said during a new conference at Destin Elementary School.
There is also $550 million in funding to continue to raise minimum teacher salaries, $50 million more than last year’s budget allocation.
DeSantis said over the past year, minimum pay for Florida’s teachers increased by an average of $6,000 from $40,000 to $46,000.

DESTIN, Fla. (Tribune News Service) For the second year in a row, Destin resident and Army veteran Geoff Speyrer completed a grueling 24-hour physical challenge to raise awareness and money for veteran suicide prevention.
The event is called SET 22, with the SET standing for strength, endurance, and training. Speyrer said the 22 refers to the number of veterans who take their lives every day.
Beginning at midnight Friday, Speyrer and fellow cyclists Sean Kamm and Kathleen Carrier made four loops by bike around Destin and Scenic Highway 98 for a total of 100 miles. About noon Saturday, he started off on foot with about a dozen other runners to make one more loop around Destin, racking up a 26.2-mile marathon.
Airport Road open after Destin Water Users construction

DESTIN – Airport Road is now open after Destin Water Users completed installation of a new reclaimed water line across the road. The road was reopened around 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, after completion of repaving.
Destin Water Users will continue extending the new reclaimed water line west along Airport Road right-of-way to Kell Aire Drive. From there, the reclaimed line will turn north, and Destin Water Users will work through Kell Aire and Spring Lake Subdivisions to extend the line to the Destin Elementary School.
Destin Water Users thanks the public for their cooperation with this recent road closure and encourages motorists to use caution around future construction areas.
