Hackers stole 19. 7 million Social Security numbers of americans who went through federal government background checks. They took another 1. 8 million from the applicants friends and family. The data had been stored by the office of personnel management, essentially the Human Resources department for the federal government. The hackers swept up addresses, education and employment history along with mental health, criminal and financial records. More than 1 million americans fingerprints were stolen. Some victims received letters from opm alerting them to the breach. They offer credit monitoring and other services.
