Speech by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee - Private Members Bill – Children Amendment Bill You are here: Home Private Members Bill – Children Amendment Bill 2 March 2021     I would like to thank Senator McDowell and the other proposing Senators for bringing this Bill before the Seanad.  It has now passed all stages in the Seanad with some Government amendments and with Government support.  I would like also to acknowledge at the outset the Private Member’s Bill proposed by Deputy O’Callaghan which addresses the same issue and to thank him and Senator McDowell for their cooperation.   This Bill is in response to issues from the recent decision of the courts in DPP and E.C V. Irish Times and others.

Everything we can do must be done - Taoiseach reacts to Stardust inquest funding issue

The Taoiseach has told the Dail that he will pursue the issue of funding for the new Stardust Inquests with the Justice Minister. Social Democrats TD for Dublin Bay North, Cian O’Callaghan, had called on the Taoiseach to ask if the Minister would meet with the families legal representative to resolve the issue of funding so that the inquests can begin. Fresh inquests in the deaths of 48 young people in the 1981 Dublin nightclub fire were due to get underway early this year but problems with funding have delayed the process. The families of the victims have long campaigned for fresh inquiries into the deaths of their loved ones after they managed to have an initial verdict that arson was the probable cause of the blaze overturned.
