The search is on to replace Detroit Police Chief James Craig.
The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners on Thursday voted unanimously to begin the process of finding a replacement for Craig, who announced his retirement earlier this week.
The move comes at a time when violent crime is rising sharply in the city. At Thursday s meeting, Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald said that homicides increased by 31% and non-fatal shootings by 45% in 2021, said Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald.
The board is responsible for selecting candidates for the chief s job under the city charter. As required under section 7805 of the city charter, the board shall perform its mandated duty to conduct a professional search to identify qualified candidates for Detroit police chief, said board chairman Willie Bell.
