Board of Police Commissioners prepare to search for new police chief

The search is on to replace Detroit Police Chief James Craig.
The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners on Thursday voted unanimously to begin the process of finding a replacement for Craig, who announced his retirement earlier this week.
The move comes at a time when violent crime is rising sharply in the city. At Thursday's meeting, Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald said that homicides increased by 31% and non-fatal shootings by 45% in 2021, said Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald. 
The board is responsible for selecting candidates for the chief's job under the city charter. 
"As required under section 7805 of the city charter, the board shall perform its mandated duty to conduct a professional search to identify qualified candidates for Detroit police chief," said board chairman Willie Bell.
