The dumping yard at Kanjurmarg is proving to be a big hindrance to the survival of golden jackals, which are chiefly found in the mangroves from Deonar to Thane – now rechristened as the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. Just as the leopards are the most important part of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park habitat, the golden jackal is the chief mammal of the mangroves. But as their habitat contracts, their numbers are fast dwindling. When they venture into human settlements in search of food, many a time they are knocked down by passing vehicles.
