Ennis Mart s sheep yard
Ennis Mart’s manager, Martin McNamara, reported a super trade at Monday’s (April 12) sheep sale, with a very strong demand seen across the board, but in particular for hoggets and cast ewes.
Numbers presented for sale at the Clare-based mart were up on the previous week, with 300 sheep on offer in total.
He said that hoggets outshone the spring lambs on the day, with hogget prices topping €186/head for 10 at 66kg.

This top price was closely followed by a pen of 65kg hoggets that sold for €185/head.
In saying that, spring lambs were still a very sharp trade with prices reaching €183/head for two at 54kg, with many of the spring lambs over 40kg making over €160/head.

On the outskirts of Headford, Tom Curran is a full-time farmer operating a store-to-beef system in Mausrevagh, Co. Galway, buying and finishing continental bullocks.
Tom buys in approximately 100 store bullocks annually, finishing continental bullocks both at grass during the summer, and houses the remaining steers for finishing over the winter period.
Agriland spoke with Tom about the current operation on the farm and got an insight into his approach to finishing these steers.

Tom’s farm resides over 100ac and, as previously mentioned, he currently buys in store bullocks with the aim of killing them at 26-30 months of age. The target is not to allow the bullocks to pass the 30-month-old bracket.

The wet weather failed to put much of a dampener on the trade for cattle last week, as prices reported were more or less unaffected from the previous week.
There were fears that the heavy rainfall would make some farmers postpone their buying of store cattle until the weather cleared up.
Speaking with one mart manager in particular about custom last week, they had noticed some buyers taking a step back – yet prices weren’t hit too badly.
In the store trade, some marts were seeing similar week-on-week prices paid – with the 500-600kg quality continental bullock continuing to range from €2.22/kg up to highs of €2.45/kg.
Hogget prices reach €181/head and €178/head at Ennis and Athenry Marts respectively agriland.ie - get the latest breaking news, showbiz & celebrity photos, sport news & rumours, viral videos and top stories from agriland.ie Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday newspapers.
