The Baller Awards | The Cascade

Welcome to The Cascade’s first annual Baller Awards! UFV’s athletic awards are yet to be given out, yet we here at The Cascade jumped the gun and decided on what awards we’d be giving (and whom we’d give them to). Some are a little less than conventional, but they’re all stuffed with prestige and glory and fabulous prizes (that possibly don’t exist)! This year’s winners are … (drumroll) … Female athlete of the year: Kayla Bruce (Women’s Volleyball) Hands down Kayla Bruce. With no disrespect intended to any other female athletes at UFV, Bruce is the clear winner of this year’s highest athletic honour. PACWEST Player of the Year and CCAA player of the year, Bruce led her team to a national title after a near perfect season. Seriously, this girl has raised the bar for what is expected from athletes at UFV.

Cascades melt Avalanche in women s volleyball

It was a clean sweep over the weekend for the UFV Cascades. On Sunday the women won the tail end of a home back to back against the College of the Rockies Avalanche by a score of 3 sets to 0. In doing so the Cascades also notched their twentieth win of the campaign, matching their season total from a year ago.  By improving their record to 20-2, the win puts UFV atop the PACWEST division once again, separating them from rivals VIU who are hot on their heels at 19-3. The Cascades came out aggressive in the first set, carrying an early lead to a 25-13 win. Surrey, BC native Kyra Tome played a big role in the set, providing several assists to teammates, Kayla Bruce and Juliana Penner. The second set delivered much of the same one way traffic from UFV, taking the set 25-13 once again. COTR made a bid to extend the game in the third set, matching UFV point for point till the end. Trailing 21-20, resilient play by Vancouver, BC’s Jania Toljanich, who provided one dig and two crucial ki

Women rally after slow start, improve to 7-1

Print Edition: November 9, 2011 The women’s volleyball team lost their second and third sets of the season, but not their fourth in their first of two meetings with their toughest opponent so far this season, the VIU Mariners. Despite the teams’ identical undefeated records coming into the weekend’s matchup, a difference was apparent from the match’s opening. The Cascades began Friday’s game with an uncharacteristic lack of composure, allowing the Mariners to take the first set by a 10-point margin off the strong play of Leanna Gildersleeve. Following briefly contesting a call on the landing of the ball that ended the set, it seemed coach Dennis Bokenfohr did everything possible to get his team back into the game. Never sitting down for the rest of the match, Bokenfohr was more vocal, coaching and addressing his players in between points.
