A Delhi court has directed the Delhi police to file an Action Taken Report (ATR) on a complaint filed by social activist Harsh Mander to lodge a case against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kapil Mishra for allegedly provoking people to engage in riots in February last year.
The riots in northeast Delhi left 53 dead and several hundred injured.
The court was hearing the matter on the direction of the Delhi High Court, which was approached by Mr Mander last year. Since, the matter has already once gone to the High Court of Delhi, this court deems it appropriate to call the report from DCP concerned. Let action taken report be called from DCP concerned for March 9 on the complaint given, Metropolitan Magistrate Himanshu Raman Singh said in an order passed on January 29.

New Delhi: A court here has rejected the bail plea of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student and Pinjra Tod member Devangana Kalita, booked under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in a northeast Delhi riots case, saying provisions of the anti-terror law have been “rightly invoked” in the case against her.
The court’s order, by the Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat, in this refusal, is worded very similarly to its order in the rejection of Natasha Narwal’s bail. Kalita and Narwal were arrested for allegedly being part of a premeditated conspiracy behind the riots in February 2020. They are both members of Pinjra Tod.

A Delhi court on Friday criticised the media for publishing alleged confessional statements of activist Umar Khalid in a case related to the violence in the national Capital in February 2020, without clarifying that his statements were not admissible as evidence,
Live Law reported.
The court was hearing a plea filed by Khalid, stating that his right to free and fair trial was getting affected as sections of the media quoted selectively from his disclosure statement and falsely claimed them to be part of his confessional statement.
In an order passed on Friday, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dinesh Kumar said that a reporter should have the basic knowledge that a confessional statement made to a police official is not admissible as an evidence and that a reader should be informed about that, according to

New Delhi: There was reasonable ground to prima facie show that former JNU student leader Umar Khalid, suspended AAP Councillor Tahir Hussain and others conspired on north-east Delhi riots last year, a court here said on Tuesday while taking cognisance of the supplementary charge sheet filed in the case.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Dinesh Kumar said there was sufficient material on record to proceed against Khalid in the case related to the communal violence in Khajuri Khas area in February last year.
