CSPAN3 President Bill Clinton Impeachment - Senate Trial July 13, 2024

What do you remember about what happened and how all of this transpired over the next month . Alexis the senate trial was fascinating because of the idea that it is called a trial, but it is not a legal proceeding and is at its heart very political. But it had so many interesting, dynamic characters involved in it. Robert byrd, senator byrd of west virginia, a stalwart constitutional scholar and not a supporter or friend of bill clinton in any particular way, he ended up at one point just throwing up his hands and saying that this should not even have happened, that the trial was misguided. He even told his colleagues that he was going to introduce a motion to dismiss the whole thing. Different senators played different roles. The house managers were fascinating to listen to. The president s legal team was really interesting. He had a strong array of legal representation there. And he also tried to sort of, what would you say, to try to add, to put some english on the ball. His legalen

One minute past 12 30. Welcome, everyone. I have the happy task of introducing your president and my friend, marnie sandweiss. Iven of what i have been describing as an intellectual wedding toast. We will present this room as a vegas wedding chapel and tell the story of marnie and me and work, which got us all here. Let me start with the magical alchemy of graduate school. Thinkers leadheaded turned into golden tongued scholars, writers, and teachers. Picture a process that works Something Like this. An Admissions Committee imagines a group of students as a cohort. The cohort becomes classmates. The classmates become colleagues. And once in a while, they become lifelong friends. So, colleagues, cohort, classmate, colleague, and that golden thing, a friend. I am cheating a little bit yaleuse marnie came to to study with Harold Lamarr a year after me, and she was in the History Department, and i was in that ragtag group in american studies. [cheers and applause] not a cohort, exactly. We

CSPAN3 Cuyahoga River Fire 50th Anniversary July 13, 2024

The Cuyahoga River as it reaches lake erie after a 100 mile journey from its headwaters is an exhaustive stream, abused and misused by man and his machines. Without the cuyahoga, cleveland and akron would not exist. The river was the reason for originally settling this portion of the western reserve in the 1780s. The river called crooked by the delaware indians provided a waterway to the interior of ohio. And so man came and continued coming. Until today, nearly two Million People live and work in the river basin. In creating this urban complex, man has used the river as men have always used rivers. The flow has been put to work as a navigable stream, a water supply, and as a sewer. Mans mark is everywhere. Is this mark an epitaph or the cuyahoga . Joining us from the cleveland area is David Stradling. He is a professor of history at the university of cincinnati and the coauthor of where the river burned carl stokes and the struggle to save cleveland. Let me begin, though, by asking ph

CSPAN3 American Artifacts George Washingtons Crossing Reenactment July 13, 2024

Night, 1776. What happened here is one of the most unexpected and daring military maneuvers of the American Revolution. And the story is washington and the Continental Army, after having lost battles in new york and retreating across new jersey, came into bucks county in the beginning of december 1776. They encamped in several locations around this area, including the Thompson Neely house, which is also part of our park. And things were pretty desperate at this point for washington and the patriot cause. The Continental Army really needed a win. Washington was afraid that the british were going to invade philadelphia and take over the capital. And he really knew that what he was a bold action. And after meeting with his war counsel, they made a decision that on christmas night, they would cross the delaware and march to trenton to attack a outpostost a hessian at trenton. As they began to march from the river, a snowstorm started and the weather was terrible, there was snow and hail an

CSPAN2 Richard Bell Stolen July 13, 2024

Remarkable places and events like this are really remarkable opportunities we have. I always like to start with these events especially on nights when we are inviting remarkable writers into our midst to talk a little bit about the shop. First i want to talk about richard bell tonight who is a scholar and writer, beautiful writer. This particular book really jumps in with this incredibly human picture of a young boy and from that moment i knew i was in short creative hands as well as scholarly hands. He is educated at cambridge and harvard and beloved professor at the university of maryland. One of the Major University system of maryland awards. I think if there is a round of applause as well its for people educating the next generation of people to have a sense of our history and a sense of what it means as human beings in the world but also particularly americans and someone from elsewhere dedicated to helping us mind history. He is a 2017 public scholar after the National Endowment
