The DeKalb County Board of Education on Tuesday night heard from board attorney Taylor Brooks of Lanier Ford Shaver and Payne Attorney at Law, following the approval of the resignation of DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett effective June 8, 2021.
Brooks took the opportunity to walk the board through the process of selecting a new superintendent for the district.
âI represent a lot of boards of education around north Alabama, and part of my service is to do superintendent searches for various boards,â said Brooks. âWithin the last year, Morgan County had a middle of the term search for a superintendent which would be very similar to this situation.â
DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett last Thursday provided insight on the second round of Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) benefits set to be distributed this year.
The Alabama Department of Human Resources received federal approval to distribute a second round of P-EBT benefits to eligible families following the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services approval of the plan on April 13, 2021.
The P-EBT program allows children to receive benefits equal to the National School Lunch Program reimbursement rate for eligible children. According to the Alabama Department of Human Resources, benefits for children attending schools will be calculated for August 2020f through May 2021.

I consider this a great honor and a statement of support not only for me but specifically in regard for the great work that we have accomplished in DeKalb County, he said.

The DeKalb County Board of Education Thursday night approved a COVID Supplement Resolution granting a temporary one-time pay increase for all full-time eligible employees for $1,000.
Chairman Randy Peppers said through conversation with DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett and members of the board, he recommended the board approve a temporary one-time supplemental pay increase for all full-time classified and certified employees for $1,000 for additional time, effort and service that was necessary this school year and will be necessary for the remainder of the Spring 2021-21 semester to successfully meet the challenges that have been presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
âI along with Dr. Barnett and the entire board of education are grateful for the work our employees have provided for our students, families and communities during this time,â he said. âWe hope you take this as a token of our gratitude for all youâve done.â
