A recent investigation by the British daily Financial Times has uncovered a disturbing trend of artificial intelligence (AI) being weaponised to spread disinformation in the lead-up to the general elections in Bangladesh. The report indicates that entities aligned with the government are utilising AI tools from various start-ups to craft deepfake videos and fabricated news
Recently, a deepfake video featuring South Indian actress Rashmika Mandanna went viral, prompting IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar to remind social media platforms to swiftly remove such inappropriate content.
"Now every youth understands technology as well as uses it. Any resource can be put to good use and misused as well. The same is true with technology as well. If it is used properly, it will benefit society and the country, but if misused it will affect humanity," she said.
Amid consternation and outrage over a series of deepfake videos, actor Alia Bhatt has joined the list of celebrities who have fallen prey to the technology.
