MUMBAI: Distress among farmers in Maharashtra pushed 2,851 of them to end their lives last year, according to data compiled by state relief and rehabi.
Farmers in Maharashtra's cotton bowl, Yavatmal, have requested official permission to cultivate 'ganja' due to their ongoing debt and poor returns from conventional crops. The farmers, affiliated with the Shetkari Sangathana, handed over a memorandum to the Amravati divisional commissioner, highlighting their plight. The divisional commissioner will forward the demand to the state government.

The Shiv Sena on Wednesday hit out at the Centre for pushing debt-ridden farmers into greater despair and allowing their farms to fall into ruin by brandishing the “knife of demonetisation”.
In an editorial in its mouthpiece Saamana, the bickering ally also questioned the apathy of the government towards the agricultural sector at a time when industry and the services sector received periodical boosts for their development.
