UK likely to force NHS staff to have COVID shots, Javid says

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain is likely to require staff in the National Health Service to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, Health Secretary Sajid Javid said on Monday. He told Sky News that mandatory vaccines for health workers would help to protect patients, and that he was not deterred by the fact there is already a staff shortage in the health system. We are considering it, he told Sky News. We re yet to make a final decision but I am leaning towards doing it. (Reporting by Paul Sandle and Kate Holton)

Doctors urge unvaccinated Hungarians to avoid weekend rallies

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungary s main doctors association on Friday urged Hungarians not immunised against COVID-19 to stay away from mass rallies this weekend amid a rise in cases across central Europe. The region has the European Union s lowest vaccination rates, an unwelcome distinction in which both political and economic factors play a role, and deadlier variants of the virus are spreading there fast. Supporters of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, 58, are to hold a march across central Budapest on Saturday to mark the 65th anniversary of Hungary s failed uprising against Soviet rule. Orban s rallies generally attract tens of thousands and the event can serve as a show of force for the nationalist, who is contesting a Spring parliamentary vote in which he will face a united opposition for the first time since 2010. The joint opposition also plans a rally of its own, its first major mass event since small-town mayor Peter Marki-Zay stunned leftist frontrunner Klara Dobrev in a primary ru

Romania s Iohannis nominates Iraqi war veteran Ciuca as PM designate

By Radu-Sorin Marinas BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Romania s president nominated Nicolae Ciuca as prime minister on Thursday, asking the retired army general to form a centrist government to end a month-long policy stalemate as rising COVID-19 infections threaten to overwhelm hospitals. One of the European Union s poorest members, Romania has been in political paralysis since a Liberal-led government was toppled by parliament on Oct. 5, threatening its economic recovery and efforts to cut big budget and external shortfalls. The political crisis must end. Now. Now, we all need to end this crisis, which has gone on for so long, given the pandemic crisis, the dramatic situation of hospitals while awaiting the winter, President Klaus Iohannis told reporters. Ciuca, 54, a Liberal currently serving as Romania s caretaker defence minister, served in U.S.-led military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has 10 days to put together a cabinet and seek a parliamentary vote of confidence. Analysts say

Mozambique wants $2 bln debt relief from guilty Credit Suisse

A Mozambique public finance watchdog is demanding an estimated $2 billion (CHF1.8 billion) in full debt relief from Credit Suisse, that is ten times more than what Swiss banking giant is willing to write off. Credit Suisse s admission of responsibility, failure to comply with the law (.) and involvement of employees in bribery underscores the legitimacy of FMO s demand for full cancellation of the illegal debt,” said the Budget Monitoring Forum (FMO), a coalition of civil society groups working on public finance accountability. The statement was made in response to a settlement reached by the Swiss bank with regulators in several countries over a corruption in Mozambique, Keystone-SDA news agency reported Thursday. There was no immediate comment from Credit Suisse. On Tuesday, under a settlement reached by US and UK authorities, Credit Suisse agreed to forgive $200 million in debt owed to the African nation. The charges related to the almost $1 billion in bond offerings and a syndica
