speaker nancy pelosi is speaking to reporters later this morning. congress can tinker with the numbers, but it should get it out. the problem is the process that this is roped up into. it s likely to go on the government funding bill which has a september 30th deadline. we know congress loves to brush up against deadlines and get really close to it and there are contentious matters on that bill. the debt limit, my sources tell me many democrats expect to put a debt extension on the bill and that is a red line that senate minority leader, mitch mcconnell has drawn. he said republicans will not support raising the debt limit now and the democrats in his view need to do that on their own. this is the political football that the disaster aid is going to be roped up into, completely separate issues heading up against this end of september deadline where congress has to fund the government, there s going to be a deadline to raise the debt limit. flood insurance is expiring, a
about keeping the government running or increasing the debt ceiling, maintaining the debt extension, the ceiling. and when you look at all of that, then to throw into the mix, okay you will take on a hot button immigration issue, ryan is really telling him here, hey, you know, maybe we will do that, maybe we won t. but let congress start to take a crack at it and we can spread this out: there are other more pressing issues. let me get in one more to kelly, and the white house announced obs thursday the president is donating a million dollars do the harvey relief effort. but listen to the difference on thursday versus friday of the source of that money. watch. i m happy to tell that you he is would like to join in the efforts that a lot of people across this country have done and he is pledging a million dollars of personal money to the fund his personal money or money
discipline, but it s a hard shot. steve, you know how mitch mcconnell thinks about these things. do you expect leader mcconnell to wrap all of the difficult issues up into one package so that it s one vote essentially on the debt ceiling, on the budget, and on hurricane relief? you know, i think that s a real possibility. when you don t have enough time, the thing you have to do and this sounds like yogi berra, is create more time. that s fair. and they really do have the ability to do that. if they want to have a short-term, continuing rez liegs f resolution for spending for the government through the end of december, and if they want to have a short-term debt extension to the end of december, then they can probably work out and i think this is what mr. mcconnell would like to do would be able to work out the funding for the government, the first part of the funding for what is going to be a very expensive hurricane harvey recovery and very long by the way as you point
vanlt in those positions because we cannot calculate when the next natural disaster will take place. so hopefully kelly being in there will enable to have some discipline, but it s a hard shot. steve, you know how mitch mcconnell thinks about these things. do you expect leader mcconnell to wrap all of the difficult issues up into one package so that it s one vote essentially on the debt ceiling, on the budget, and on hurricane relief? you know, i think that s a real possibility. when you don t have enough time, the thing you have to do and this sounds like yogi berra, is create more time. that s fair. and they really do have the ability to do that. if they want to have a short-term, continuing rez liegs resolution for spending for the government through the end of december, and if they want to have a short-term debt extension to the end of december, then they can probably work out
will vote for i know that i d be interested in voting for just a debt extension. but if they couple it with policy changes, such as giving tax breaks to the wealthy or cutting programs that are critically important to middle income families, then they re on their own. i guess the bottom line is government shut down, would you call for that? april 28th is the deadline to fund the government. should democrats rule out a shut down? no, democrats do not want to shut down. we want the government to continue, we tried to get a full year budget this year so what leverage do you have? sorry to interrupt, what leverage do you have? if the republicans act responsibly, if they work with democrats, we ll get a budget done this year. we know it s not going to be our budget. we know that we won t get the what we want, but if it s a true compromise, then democrats are prepared to work with republicans. but if they go their own way, if they look for tax cuts for the wealthy look to cut s
