how far along are we in this segment? four minutes, five minutes? okay. we re about seven minutes into this segment. and here s the issue. your policy messages last night are not what s being talked about. it s that moment that s being talked about. and you had other good debate performances. but you re still lagging behind in the polls, right? 1% in our latest cnn poll. so do you think this is going to help you or hurt you, what happened last night? what is it going to take to break through? oh, look, i think people saw last night that i m going to fight for a health care system in the united states that covers everybody. i m going to be uncompromising about that. look, these are debates. this is politics. everybody who s running for president, we know we re not running for student council. you re running for president of the united states. and so, you know, i think what people saw was that i m going to be a fighter for the people who need me to fight for them and i m going to do
barack obama, people didn t do that and generally tried to support barack obama, that was good. they generally, with the exception of julian castro tried to learn the lesson which was don t attack each other. was kind of conspicuous when castro went after biden you had one of the big moments of the night when pruth saete buttigie they don t want to see us attacking each other, they want us to attack trump. thats is something they didn t do in the first two was take the critique to donald trump. so those three things, don t attack obama, don t attack each other and do attack donald trump, you saw a lot of that s that on stage and ghors simple but good lessons from the first two debates. i think joe biden did not have a sp spectacular night, but it was the best of his three debate performances. by that measure, not necessarily the highest bar in the world, but he managed to the classic phrase, he did what he had to do i think last night. in particular, not just that last answer, willie
those things? first of all, it s absolutely true that the numbers people month vate in south bend just like in the country it s a worse experience for black residents. you look at employment, housin, health, and it is worse. a mayor s not going to solve these issues overnight that. doesn t mean we don t work on it the so if the test is did you fix racism and poverty and crime, of course not. but if the test is did we work on these things and get somewhere? then i believe we have a lot to talk about in terms of how we ve handled this in south bend. with me now is charlamagne tha god, co-host of the breakfast club who we just heard asking pete buttigieg about criticism that he has not done enough to improve the lives of african americans in south bend, indiana. you did not go easy on him and said could have done better in some of the debate performances. how did he do this morning on the show? i think he always done good in settings where he s able to
howard: i have videotape of you on this program saying bernie sander wills win the nomination. do you want to revisit that? absolutely. i think he s falling and falling. i m watching elizabeth warren. i ve seen her debate performances. elizabeth warren has the correct opening for democrats. she has the correct close. she always includes a fact. she tells a personal story and she has dig at president trump. those are the five key components to win a debate. she s won the debates. if biden doesn t figure out how to communicate straight to that camera, he s going to lose. howard: do you think the press would prefer warren to joe biden who is often painted uninspiring out of touch and kind of gaffe machine? ideologically i think the press is more in line with where warren is. but she s a better candidate at this point. joe biden has better experience than anybody running for office. howard: he s been around a long time. he s been around a long time. his communication isn t
