Jefferson Knapp, owner of Kraken Books, Ltd. is doing something he has wanted to do since the pandemic began last spring. He is holding a book drive fundraiser for the five elementary schools in El Dorado and Towanda.
Kraken Books, Ltd., is a publishing company located in El Dorado, and they have a goal to donate one book to every child in each of the elementary schools.
“This has been heartbreaking seeing kids’ lives changed this drastically,” said Knapp. “Their world is already small, and when you throw all this at them, it is no doubt affecting them.”
Mayor hosts prayer breakfast

After a hiatus last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast resumed this year on May 6 at the El Dorado Civic Center.
Mayor Bill Young welcomed guests and shared the history of the day National Day of Prayer.
The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation,” Young said. “It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.”
Mental health help calls on the rise

Pam Dunham, Chair, and Tanner Brown, led the meeting and lunch was hosted and provided by Butler County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Butler County Community Development, and Misfit Kitchen.
Amy Collins and Jena Prichard did not have happy news when the representatives of the South Central Mental Health recently gave a presentation to the Local Area Planning Committee on the mental health effects of COVID-19.
Collins informed the group of the differences they saw from the beginning of the pandemic through the current time. She discussed how they noticed a decline in calls, and office visits in the beginning. However, by the summer and fall of 2020, they started to see a steep increase in calls and office visits.
Legion group honors administrative professionals

Formerly known as Secretary’s Day, National Administrative Professionals Day, is celebrated on the Wednesday of the last full week in April. This year the local American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit No. 81 in El Dorado, wanted to acknowledge some of the hardest working Administrative Professionals in El Dorado - those working for the school district and the city.
“We have so many unsung heroes,” said Karen Hasting, ALA member. “They often work behind the scenes, keeping everything together for those out in the field. After such a hard year, we wanted to do something to acknowledge them and let them know we see all their hard work.”
