Springfield, Illinois, weather: Frigid temperatures, snow on the way

An arctic cold front coming into the Springfield area Saturday will usher in single-digit low temperatures Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Weather models are showing that the Springfield area could get 1 to 3 inches of snow Saturday afternoon into the evening, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Kirk Huettl. It will be all snow, Huettl said. We shouldn t have to worry about any freezing rain or sleet mixed in. Saturday night s low will be around zero, with wind chills around minus 15, Huettl added. There could be micro clippers or upper-level disturbances that could mean periodic chances of light snow into next week, he said.

APL will raise awareness of abused and neglected animals with a vigil

Dry dog and cat food may be dropped off at APL’s shelter from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. The Animal Protective League will hold a candlelight vigil in remembrance of Sii, a dog who died from neglect recently, at 1001 Taintor Road at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Sii, a pitbull mix, was adopted from APL in May, said director Deana Corbin. Taryn Goodwin, 30, of Springfield, was charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal last week after an investigation showed she apparently abandoned Sii in her residence without adequate access to food or water. The case was jointly investigated by the Springfield Police Department and Sangamon County Animal Control.
