I found paradise at San Antonio's new salad kitchen in Southtown

FacebookTwitterEmail I might have found a lunchtime oasis and the newcomers who ve been wiping my neighborhood H-E-B fresh out of ripe avocados.  It s Roots Salad Kitchen at the Flats at Big Tex. Leonard Lem Dixon and Michael Hicks, the owners of the spot that opened last week, are first-time restaurant owners, but they don t seem to need any training wheels.  I stopped by the restaurant a day ahead of their grand opening. The team was working like a well-oiled machine, clientele has clearly already been established, and the menu had me sending photos of my food to my health-conscious big brother.

The South Side's only bookstore needs to find a cheaper location in order to survive

The South Side s only bookstore needs to find a cheaper location in order to survive FacebookTwitterEmail The South Side s only bookstore is again asking the community to help keep its business open. Kenneth and Melissa Johnson, a married couple who own Dead Tree Books, said they are looking for a smaller location and need book sales to increase soon. Their current location at 5645 S. Flores St. is too big and too expensive and will shut down by July 30, they said. To survive, we must downsize, and we need your help, the book store tweeted Wednesday. Hundreds have shared the tweet and offered their support.

Needed Southside bookstore forced to cut back to survive

FacebookTwitterEmail Halide Altikardes (right) plays with her granddaughter, Nil Oguz, at Dead Tree Books while Altikardes son was shopping for books on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019. Dead Tree Books is the only bookstore on San Antonio s South Side and recently had put out an online plea for help to keep the business alive. Since then owners Lisa and Kenny Johnson have seen an uptick in walk-in traffic and online orders. The Johnson s started the bookstore in 2016 but the business has struggled to get customers. With the recent social media plea, people have come from all parts of town to patronize the bookstore and, for now, have staved off closure.
