There is no information available about the number of dead bodies found floating on the Ganga during the peak of the second Covid wave, the government said in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
“It is the duty of the State to protect the rights of the deceased, which also includes the right to decent burial/cremation,” said the plea, filed through advocate Manju Jetley.
As per the WHO report, water spread of virus is not expected and chances of survival of virus in river water are ruled out, Prashant Gargava, Member Secretary, CPCB, said.

The Centre said dumping of dead bodies in the Ganga and its tributaries has recently been reported, which is most undesirable and alarming .
The Centre directed Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Sunday to prevent dumping of dead bodies in the Ganga and its tributaries, and focus on their safe disposal and a dignified cremation after corpses were seen floating in these rivers following a spurt in the number of coronavirus cases.
