Protogroup hotel open in Daytona Beach, but many amenities not ready

Beach access closed again at $192m Daytona Protogroup construction site

DAYTONA BEACH  A required beach access pedestrian walkway on the northern boundary of the controversy-plagued construction site of the $192 million Protogroup twin-tower hotel-condominium project was closed again this week, at least for a time, just as Bike Week visitors started to arrive for the annual 10-day event. “We come down here every year and I don’t know how you get down to the ocean anymore,” said Perry Schafer, 60, a guest at the 10-room Sea Dunes hotel, located at the base of the Protogroup’s South Tower at the intersection of Oakridge Boulevard and North Atlantic Avenue. Schafer has been making the annual trek from his home in Omaha, Nebraska, to Bike Week for six years, joining a group of friends that has been meeting at the Sea Dunes for nearly 20 years during the event, which officially opens Friday this year.

Daytona Beach Shores gets beachside parking boost with Edwin Peck park

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES  Edwin Peck Sr. was honored at a groundbreaking ceremony for a beachside park that will bear his name, but the 102-year-old real estate developer said the honor was all his. It’s going to be a great park, and I’m happy about the fact that when I’m gone this park will be a place of real pleasure for thousands of people forever, Peck said last week. Construction on the beachfront park, located at 3167 S. Atlantic Ave., is slated to finish in late 2021. What a day. What a celebration, said Volusia County Councilwoman Billie Wheeler, who represents Daytona Beach Shores. This is my city so I’m really, really proud.

Jeff Brower gives Volusia County beach driving advocates hope

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES  When Jeff Brower takes office next month, beach driving advocates will have one of their own in the top seat on the Volusia County Council. Brower said he wants to not only restore beach driving to areas where it is prohibited today, but also prevent the loss of any other stretches of sand. It s been a horrible economic mistake, so yes, that is one of my priorities. I will bring it before the council, Brower said in an interview last week. Brower made an appearance Saturday at a fundraiser at Crabby Joe s hosted by Sons of the Beach, a nonprofit whose leaders supported Brower during his campaign against current Councilwoman Deb Denys. Recently reelected councilmember Heather Post and member-elect Danny Robbins also attended the event.
