Somersworth City council allows school district to keep surplus

Somersworth City Council allows school district to keep surplus SOMERSWORTH – The City Council voted to allow the Somersworth School Board to keep $419,671 of its more than $432,000 surplus of fiscal year 2021 appropriated funds. Typically, any unused funds go back to the city s general fund and the school district would have to request a special supplemental appropriation. Pre-COVID, there was little surplus typically left at the end of the year. The challenges faced in both this fiscal year and last due to the pandemic, have led to this unprecedented surplus. What this is allowing them to do, which we ve never done before, is to allow the school department to anticipate what the unspent funds unanticipated revenues will be in advance of their final budget preparation and show that as revenue on their ledger, City Councilor and Deputy Mayor David Witham told the council.

Somersworth, NH City Manager Robert Belmore s contract extended and amended

SOMERSWORTH  The City Council has unanimously approved an extension and several amendments to City Manager Robert Belmore s contract. Belmore was first appointed as city manger in 2005 and in that time, he has overseen numerous major projects and community enhancements over the years. The one-year extension brings Belmore s contract term to the fiscal year 2023, with that year s salary increased to $139,900, which is roughly a $5,000 increase from what he will earn in FY 2022, according to the contract. We have a lot of very large projects underway or just beginning, such as the more than $13 million upgrade to the waste water treatment facility and the construction of a new $7.7 million fire station, said David Witham, deputy mayor. We felt that solidifying city leadership as we move through these large projects was important.

Somersworth to acquire armory as National Guard leaves city

Somersworth to acquire armory as National Guard leaves city By Megan Fernandes SOMERSWORTH The New Hampshire National Guard plans to vacate its armory property in Somersworth and hand it back over to the city by the end of June. The 65-year-old armory at 15 Blackwater Road sits on 4 acres of land that was deeded to the New Hampshire National Guard in 1950. The original parcel was roughly 11.5 acres, but some of that land has been turned over to the city over the years, including what is now a baseball field. In the deed, the National Guard agreed that if the armory no longer suited its needs, that the property and buildings would be given back to the city at no cost.
