give you a couple of examples here democrats have a number of districts on this list, for instance, the second district of maine, where they are in the league, and where things look promising for them. the second district of new mexico, it s very close, but democrats are in a league. there are a number of places where democrats seem opposition. another one surprisingly is the third district of washington, this had been a republican held seat. jamie herrera butler, the republican who voted to impeach donald trump, lost the primary and still with much of the vote in, but the democrats have a real chance of picking this one off. this is the kind of district that democrats are performing better than expectations and i put them in contention for the house. but they need to win races like that, and that they need to pull a full upsets of. they need to win in a few places where right now they are trailing in the tally. we re certainly going into the election, they were not in favor in place
i think that besides appointing judges, this will be an important, important priority for the senate, they have to find a way to pass a bill that would protect voting rights, like the john lewis voting rights act and also deal with the campaign finance. we can t continue, again, allowing hundreds of millions of dollars to actually select the people that are going to serve in these elections. i think that there are three big through lines were following today in my opinion, david. i think we re looking to see if control of the senate, we re watching house numbers, i think we re talking about the legislative agenda, depending on who is in control. i also think that there is this big outstanding question about donald trump s influence on the republican party. we have seen how that has borne out for the candidates that he handpicked and endorsed. he has not proven yet he is able to pick a candidate that can flip a competitive district. but as you and i talked about,
national democrats are doing. kevin mccarthy is as weak of a speaker candidate as we have seen in a generation. mitch mcconnell, the weakest point in his political career, same with donald trump. as long as donald trump wants the hound on rhonda scent, estrada said this is not a district that a lot of people are signing him, either. david, debbie, thank you guys. coming up, we have a lot more to break down. control of the senate still up in the air as of this hour. we ll talk to our own reverend al sharpton about that and a whole lot more. don t go anywhere. n t go anywhere.
victory, but they need to say, this is now our agenda, we control this. the thing he s been saying something we ve heard more and more the last couple of nights, that kevin mccarthy s leadership is in question, we ve talked about that. mitch mcconnell s leadership is a question right now, and at some point, there are going to be small groups of people who have undue influence over the next congress, it might be freedom caucus members, might be moderate republicans, it might be moderate democrats, but it s not going to be, it may not be kevin mccarthy. what did you say, david? the ground is shifting under politics in america right now. that s exactly right, and voters have let us in that direction, right? 18, there was a coalition of i m sorry, democrats and disaffected republicans that outright rejected trumpism and gave the house back to democrats. in 2020, that coalition held. by 2022, they re saying, you know what, i like what the
