Brigadier General Matthew Trollinger, deputy director of Politico-Military Affairs in the Middle East, will testify, along with David Helvey, acting assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs. The top U.S. commander for the Middle East said Wednesday he will make recommendations to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in early June on how to monitor and fight terrorist groups in Afghanistan from beyond its borders after all American forces withdraw.

Lawmakers met to discuss the global, national and local implications of withdrawing U.S. security forces from Afghanistan, a move President Joe Biden announced in April. Some 13,000 U.S. troops in the country are set to complete their withdrawal by the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and already began moving out at the beginning of May.
