usually they are like military planes, some world war ii planes that were found largely intact and light planes. light planes go down, land on the water, don t break up and sink. but big aircraft like a 777, it s very hard to bring them down and there s been cases where they intentionally tried to land on water and usually on the ocean a wing will catch a wave and break up. it s very unusual. i won t say it s impossible but this would be a first for modern jet line fer it remained intact. david, if the boxes are recovered, who actually takes control of them? would it be australia, malaysia? australia would take control of them. right now they are under a mandate by the joint committee to have everything that s located come back to australia. so australians would contain that and then the malaysians would decide where things go from that point but there s a central locating area for all debris including the black
it s a limited haystack is less than easy. it will be fairly tricky. on air france flight 447, david, you had a general idea where the plane went down. you found debris, the pingers on the black boxes never worked. still took you months and months of searching over two years to find the wreckage, correct? took two years with all the mobilization and things like that to get back out there but all together on the water about ten weeks. actually two months of that, eight weeks was spent almost on a wild goose chase because of a bad model for retrodrifting. so drifting debris backwards took us to a bad place. you know, it s definitely doable. the team out there, phoenix international are superb at locating black box. so that s interesting, david. you re saying really on the time on the actual water was ten weeks to actually find the wreckage from the time you found the debris, not including all
welcome back, planes approximate and planes and ships are continuing the search. a pinger locater has detected more audio signals in the indian ocean. those latest signals were picked up in the northern path of the search area. the australian ship, ocean shield, two distinct pinger returns were detected. the leader on of the search operation said it could take days to confirm if the signals are indeed from flight 370. so the search takes on a new direction and authorities are encouraged but very cautious. and searching for anything but 800 meters of water, it s a complex undertaking and now we are joined by david gallow, it s
would be back in consume of days. and now? yes. anxious houston, last night he gave a very full press conference in which he did discuss the chinese. he discussed ocean shield. and he basically said he would return when there was more to report. the fact he is coming back with in 24 hours, it could be nothing. it could be another update. but i m guessing he is going to want to update us not only on the chinese pings, but also on ocean shield and the assets now being moved around. it will be a leap, don, to say at this point they re going to announce something significant. but we shall see. we shall. i ain t moving anywhere. stand by, everyone. the indian ocean is nearly three miles deep in the search area. the distance between where the possible audio contacts were heard 350 miles. not to mention waves, winds, and other objects in the hour. my panel is back. and i want them to listen to this. this is from david gallow with
deliberate and we ve long suspected that, but we haven t had the evidence. david, when we saw, when we receive the coordinantes yesterday at this time of where they reportedly heard these pulses or detected these pulse signals, those were outside of the search areas for the day. knowing what we do know now about this adjusted path, here it is. knowing what we do about the currents and what you know about this area of the world, do you think that they were right all along to be in this area or was it if it s accurate just luck that they picked this up in this area? yeah, i don t know what possessed them to go into that area, but seems this new calculation that i guess they may have gotten it right and they will have to see what pans out after the further investigation of those pings. but it s all pretty interesting. all righty. david gallow, richard quest,
