One of Minnesota s favorite far-flung music venues will test new boundaries for COVID-era live performances in March using some of the state s best-loved live acts.
Lutsen s mountainside hangout Papa Charlie s has announced a low-capacity songwriters concert series that starts this Wednesday with Low s Alan Sparhawk and continues every Wednesday night through April 7. Subsequent performers are (in order) the New Standards, Davina Lozier (of Davina & the Vagabonds), Erik Koskinen, Dave Simonett (Trampled by Turtles) and Charlie Parr.

While trying to explain the unique calling behind his earthy and expansive new album, David Huckfelt pointed to a literal call he got in 2015 from one of his music heroes before a Duluth performance with his old band the Pines.
The caller was none other than Keith Secola, singer-songwriter from the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa of northern Minnesota and originator of the 1992 American Indian rock staple NDN Kars.

Thursdays, now with more Turtles
Trampled By Turtles, which has kept pandemic times interesting with its full-band Zoom songs and streaming shows, kicks off “Trampled By Thursdays,” a four-part concert series recorded at First Avenue in Minneapolis.
Trampled By Turtles performs at Bayfront Festival Park in 2019. The band didn t return for its annual show in 2020, and the popular outdoor venue was quiet for the entire summer. In 2021 he will maintain the tradition, although potential audience members don t need to go any farther than a comfy chair; Parr will livestream from First Ave each Sunday in January, on YouTube and Facebook. Each week will feature secret special guests and likely new material from Parr s forthcoming 14th album, to be released via the legendary Smithsonian Folkways label later this year.
