Reporter you may remember nghectober meeting there was a heavy police presence. Tonight police were here but out of sight while protesters took over the meeting. Tonights Oakland School Board Meeting packed with people protesting School Closures. And they came to express anger over what happened at the Board Meeting last month. On october 23rd parents and teachers angry over the districts plan to close and merge a number of schools because of declining enrollment got into a violent clash with police after a protester jumped over a barricade. A number of people were injured. Tonight at least one person demanding an apology. Your cop took me to the hospital strapped to a gurney in handcuffs. Ive been coming to school Board Meetings most of my life. Weve never had it like this where the police have been used against us here. There will be an outside investigator coming in to look at what happened, fully analyze if things went wrong, why they went wrong, whos responsible. Reporter as prote
this area. you can still see still see some of those burning embers are stationed in different parts of this area of highway 26. so compared to yesterday. this is a much different scene. you can really smell the smoke anymore. you can actually see where you re going and some of these areas a driving down here on some of the highways. you can see that massive plume of smoke. it s not necessarily too visible anymore. today as those fire containment lines are making progress crews are making progress, so they ve been using different techniques by doing back burns and making those firebreaks and some of the people that i spoke to. there s hundreds of people that are still evacuated, but some of them say that they might not return of the reminded of the butte fire that happened back in 2015 ends and this area. you can still see some of those burn scars from from when that fire burned through. hard enough of fires up here. it s to the point where i m i m ready to leave. just feel i
They also say they are forced to move outside of oakland just to maintain a living because they simply cant afford to live in oakland anymore without that cost of living increase. The city has offered the unions a 4 increase the first year. And a 2 increase the second year. But that 2 is contingent upon generated revenue that the union says they felt was too impossible to meet. They proposed an 8 increase in pay overall over two years but mayor schaaf says they cant spend money they dont have. That would require the city to cut 188 fulltime workers because of the 19 million deficit the city would face in two years. But the fight is deeper than money tonight. The strike itself isnt sitting well with mayor libby schaaf because of the impact its having on Services Like libraries, Senior Services and head start programs and how its going to shut them down. They have the money to keep up with the cost of living. I dont understand the stubbornness of not wanting to give us what we deserve. I
Fifth avenue and foothill boulevard, hitched a ride and then ended up near ninth and international where Oakland Police took her into custody. We talked to the police about what happened. The Public Information officer told us that speed appears to be a factor in this case and he talked about the hazards of pedestrians and motorists alike on the roads. We want to take this time to remind the community of the rules of the road and to remember to adhere to those rules because it applies to it refers to the safety of the community as a whole whether youre a driver or pedestrian.
