44 new cases as the Halifax lockdown starts April 23
School cases, more variants and a nursing home infection give Friday the air of disaster. The last time the province implemented a circuit breaker lockdown was in February. Over a few days case numbers crept upward and then spiked all the way up to 10 new cases in a single day! Newly elected premier Iain Rankin and chief medical officer of health Robert Strang took fast and decisive action, immediately imposing a batch of restrictions on Halifax Regional Municipality for a month.
The province continues to advise that people are strongly encouraged to seek asymptomatic COVID-19 testing, and the recent surge in case numbers may be driving that message home. Today s report says 2,723 local tests were completed by local labs yesterday, a steep rise from the current daily average of about 2,300 tests, In vaccinations, the province s reporting today shows there were 8,455 doses delivered yesterday. This is up about 1,000 injections from last Monday, but well off the five-figure pace the province managed to reach on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week, with over 12,000, jobs per day. The province is also reporting that two more cases of the B117 variant have been identified from our recent positive tests. These were previously reported cases that were related to travel, the province says. 25 new cases on April 21, the most in nearly 5 months
At 79 active cases Wednesday, Nova Scotia s COVID-19 numbers continue to surge. Nova Scotia has 25 new cases of COVID-19 today. This is not just the highest single-day total of the year and a substantial jump from the previous high of 15 new infections reported Monday but the most in a day since the 37 cases reported November 24. And that November mark was what triggered the second-wave lockdown for Halifax that lasted well into December. Twenty-five cases is a lot to detail. St. Catherine s Elementary, Halifax St. Joseph s-Alexander McKay Elementary, Halifax
Dartmouth South Academy and Ross Road School are closed to students and those schools are moving to at-home learning for a two-week period. They are both part of the families of schools that were included in the restrictions announced earlier today.
Holland Road Elementary will remain closed to students until Wednesday, April 28. Students will learn from home until the school reopens.
St. Catherine s Elementary will remain closed to students until Wednesday, April 28. Students will learn from home until the school reopens.
St. Joseph s-Alexander McKay Elementary is currently closed due to a previous case and is expected to reopen on Monday, April 26.
