A self-described tinkerer, Braswell grew up in southern Maryland, spending a lot of time on construction sites alongside his father, a marble and tile tradesman. What you could do back then, you could never get away with today, he said, but I was going with my father on job sites when I was as young as four or five years old, carrying tile boxes back and forth and observing everything.
