A record seizure of GBL was uncovered at a Wellington property in November. A local man has been charged with importing it. Previously, police said they believed the drugs were brought into the country from China, via Auckland, and were working with liaison officers in Asia. On Friday, Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson said the investigation had involved police work around the world. “We are looking further than just one source,” he said. Rankin was already facing supply charges, following raids at multiple Wellington properties on November 13 last year. The raids uncovered the largest ever seizure of GBL in New Zealand’s history, 400 litres, had a combined street value of more than $5m and a social harm index cost of more than $30m.
