The Village Belarus has collected powerful messages from strong and free Belarusian women who are now in prison.
Maria Kalesnikava: the Incredible Belarusians have already won, while the regime has failed to do anything
Maria Kalesnikava has been in the pre-trial detention facility on trumped-up charges for more than six months. The prosecutors keep raising the stakes, and now she faces up to 12 years of imprisonment. Over the last six months, Kalesnikava gave several interviews from behind bars and sent several messages to Belarusians and the authorities through her lawyers. In her prison messages, Maria looks focused, cheerful, confident in her rightness, and continues to convince Belarusians that they are unbelievable and have already won. She behaves as if a steamroller with a red-green flag has not gone over her, as if we all are behind the bars, not her.

The case of two female Belarusian journalists jailed in February for reporting about protests in Minsk once again highlighted the severity of the government’s crackdown on news media in the former Soviet republic.
“Wearing a journalist vest in Belarus doesn’t protect you, it makes you a target,” Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya told EU officials and diplomats during a virtual meeting on Monday (8 March).
The meeting, organised by Poland’s ambassador to the EU, Andrzej Sadoś, was attended by ambassadors of the EU27 countries, as well as Canada, the United States, and Great Britain, and representatives of the European Commission, and was meant to raise awareness of the situation of journalists in Belarus.
