The Darfur Network for Monitoring and Documentation reported this week that two policemen were killed, allegedly by followers of former janjaweed leader Musa Hilal, in Jebel Marra on August 4. In Nyala, South Darfur, a young man was shot dead and his body run over by a vehicle of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). For 13 years, United Nations and African Union peacekeepers have been stationed in the Sudanese region of Darfur. On 31 December, the peacekeepers’ mandate expired. Now, reports Ayin, Sudanese security forces including the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces previously called the Janjaweed when they backed Bashir are tasked with keeping the peace and protecting the hundreds of thousand internal refugees.
