Mavado and his son Dantay Brooks
An appeal date for Mavado’s incarcerated son, Dantay Brooks, may soon be set as well-known Queen’s counsel Peter Champagnie, the attorney representing Brooks, revealed that he is awaiting the transcript of his client’s trial.
Champagnie is confident that an appeal date will be set soon after its receipt.
“The registry of the Court of Appeal has already communicated to me in writing to confirm my representation of Mr Brooks for the appeal,” Champagnie was quoted as saying in the Jamaica Observer.
“Given the much-improved rate in terms of timeline at which appeals are now being heard, it is my anticipation that as soon as the transcript from the trial is available a date will be given for the hearing of the matter,” the Queen’s Counsel continued.
Peter Champagnie
Attorney-at-law Peter Champagnie, who is also defence attorney for Mavado’s son, Dantay Brooks, and who represented Alkaline and Dexta Daps in the past, took a Jamaican cartoonist to task on Saturday morning, for an illustration which depicted defence attorneys rejoicing over the fact that no amendment would be made to Jamaica’s Criminal Justice Act.
Champagnie, a Queen’s Counsel, expressed his displeasure after the Jamaica Observer posted a cartoon on its Instagram page which showed an apparently money-grubbing defence attorney sprawled on a wad of cash on one side of the scale of justice whilst ripping a document in two, while on the other end of the scale were bodies of murder victims piled on top of each other.
