Judge raps officer’s abuse of power

Moments before being sentenced to 15 years in prison for raping a teenaged girl, former police constable Jason Andre Callender was admonished by Justice Christopher Birch for breaking the same law he had sworn to uphold.
During Friday’s sentencing in the No.5 A Supreme Court, Justice Birch said Callender had used police power to rape and commit an act of serious indecency against a 16-year-old girl and had also attempted to silence her a decade ago.
Callender, 36, of 6th Avenue, Durants, St James, had previously been found guilty of the two offences which occurred between June 1 and October 7, 2010.

Bashment Monkey who has racked up over 270 convictions has been disqualified from driving route taxis for nine months effective immediately, the Court of Appeal ruled Wednesday.
A panel of appeal judges – Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham, Justice Rajendra Narine and Justice Francis Belle – handed down a unanimous decision after hearing submissions from Alleyne’s attorney Kristin Turton and Crown Counsel Danielle Mottley for the prosecution.
Alleyne, 43, from Eckstein Village, Tudor Bridge, appealed against the Commissioner of Police over the “severity of the sentence” imposed on him by a Bridgetown magistrate in connection with a traffic offence five years ago.

The police constable found guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl will be sentenced on April 30 by Justice Christopher Birch.
Jason Andre Callender was found guilty on October 8, 2020, by a nine-member jury of the rape and serious indecency of the teen between June 1 and October 7, 2010.
Appearing in a virtual sitting of the No. 5A Supreme Court, a probation officer today read a pre-sentencing report in respect of the 38-year-old, of 6th Avenue, Durant’s Village, St James.
The officer, Louie Linton said family members described Callender as a helpful and caring individual who was non-violent and not abusive. He said Callender’s parents were shocked at the guilty verdict because they thought their son and the victim were in a relationship. The father recalled how Callender and the girl would have lunch at his residence on occasions.

Man must pay for having illegal weapon

The High Court has imposed a $5 000 fine on a man from Lower Carlton, St James who had a 12-gauge flare launcher.
Theodore Orlando Layne, has three months to pay the money to the No. 2 Supreme Court or he faces an alternative of two years in prison.
Madam Justice Wanda Blair handed down the ruling on the convicted man who had previously pleaded guilty before the court to the November 11, 2013 charge.
“I must say very clearly that this court is cognizant of the fact that there are too many illegal firearms on the streets of Barbados. A firearm in any form is a dangerous weapon that is capable of causing death and serious injury to hapless victims. The court has a responsibility to pass sentences toward . . . offenders.
