Cape girls track finishes dual-meet season undefeated

With Unified athlete Erin Frye is Michele Frye. The Cape Henlopen girls’ track & field team finished off an emotional dual-meet season with an undefeated record of 8-0. Next up are the Henlopen Conference Championships to be held at Jim Blades Stadium at Lake Forest High School in Felton. The Vikings lost teammate Maggie Browne during spring break in a terrible accident and dedicated their season to the late sophomore jumper. “We wore the letter ‘M’ on our uniforms as we dedicated each meet to Maggie,” said junior Tia Jarvis. “The Smyrna girls presented our team with a large framed picture of Maggie, which was so nice, and we take the picture of her to every meet. She was definitely a part of each win with the girls.”

DAN COOK PHOTOS Tim Bamforth March 5, 2021 The Cape boys’ winter track team finished third in the state with 72.5 points, behind state champion Sallies with 117 points and runner-up Smyrna with 86 points.  The Cape girls’ team finished fifth with 38 points. Padua took home the trophy with 178 points, followed by Ursuline with 82, Smyrna with 61 and Tatnall with 59 points. Cape thrower Josiah Miller won his first state individual title in the shot put with a toss of 46-feet-10-inches. Sophomore Ryan Baker ran his season and personal best in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:02.96, good for second place. Junior John Small was third in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.72, while in the 200-meter dash, Ja’on Harris was fifth in 23.68 and Konner Knarr was seventh in 23.87. Andrew Wolak finished fifth in the 400 meters in a time of 53.12, while the Vikings were third in the 4-by-200 relay in a season-best time o

Gabriel Gumas of Caesar Rodney wins the 55-meter hurdles in 9.40. Montana Jones wins the 55 meters in 8.10. The Cape Henlopen Vikings hosted the Riders of Caesar Rodney in winter track & field action held outside at Legends Stadium in cold and windy conditions Feb. 16. The Vikings easily won both meets, with the boys’ score 88-20 and the girls’ score 98-8.  “The boys are coming along, and for the conditions, they ran well,” said coach Ellis Gaulden.   The Cape boys were led by Ryan Baker and Barritt Ross with 9.25 points each, as they each won an event, grabbed a second place and ran on a winning relay.
