First up tonight that breaking news here in the district, a child struck and killed in a crash. It started out as a hitandrun. Megan fitzgerald on the scene. Reporter it has been about 2 1 2 hours since this accident happened. A very active scene. Police have taped off the area where the crash happened. They tell us around 8 30 when the driver collided with the 6yearold boy who was rushed to the hospital. Investigators are telling us that that child has died. We are told that the driver then drove to a different location where he called 911. At this point we are told that the driver is cooperating with the investigation and is being there is a lot we still dont know at this point which is why investigators are out here. That the flames just started shooting up very quickly. We have some video for you that student katie barr shot as the flames were shooting off the back of the house. She told us that it really just went very, very quick. Heres how she said she found out about the fire. I was asleep and my roommates friend came upstairs and he was sleep on the couch and he said theres a fire and our smoke detectors werent going off. We just got up and i went downstairs and i had my phone flashlight on and i couldnt see like 2 feet in front of me. Reporter now, she said that the smoke alarms were not going off. She clarified later to say they were going off in the basement at the time but the smoke had not yet reached the rest of the house and so thats why they didnt hear it on those upper levels but she said it looked like the deck just started to go up right like that so very lucky for these students. Reporter when police towed the car eight hours after the shooting you see bullet holes and heavy damage to the front and rear of the civic. Police say while it is unclear if the sapped gun, a car can be seen as a weapon, and officers to have defend themselves. Officers obviously are allowed to defend themselves if they feel that their lives are in danger, if theyre at risk of Great Bodily Injury or death. A cal water operator noticed someone cut the locks on the gate and on one of the 250,000 gallon water tanks. He found graffiti and possible tampering with the venting system. Its a very heavy system. We dont think there was any branch, but out of an abundance of caution were telling our residents not to drink the water in the Sunshine Gardens area. Reporter cal water took initial water samples.
