Live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. Tonight, a bay area Deputy Arrested for allegedly choking a man and then lying about it. Good evening, im ken bastida. Im veronica de la cruz. Liz has the night off. Mark kelly is outside the jail where the deputy was booked a few hours ago. Mark . Reporter Michael Lewelling is posting bail tonight at the hall of justice. The 33yearold sheriffs Deputy Arrested for what the da says he did on the job. Michael lewelling was patrolling at the San Francisco General Hospital november 3. And according to court papers, he accused a patient at the hospital of assaulting him in the waiting room with a wooden cane. The patient was arrested but then surveillance camera footage showed something very different than what the deputy described. It showed that Michael Lewelling was doing the alleged beating, even grabbing the victims throat and choking him. District attorney George Gascon releasing this statement. The grim discovery came after a group was out for a walk and then noticed someone was missing. Reporter thats right. And firefighters just arrive ing on scene a short time ago. If you look over my shoulder. You can get a glimpse of them hard at work trying to recover the body of a 20yearold man who apparently fell while he was hiking with friends in this area. The friends called police when he disappeared on their hike. Police found his body 200 feet down a ravine. They are trying to figure out if indeed he lost his footing and fell. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Because of how rough the terrain is, firefighters are having to assist to extricate the body from the area. It happened on the property of the uc berkeley campus. But the person who died was not affiliated with the university in any way. They have not yet identified him. And so far there are no signs that this was foul play.
