The new year brings changes to the leadership at Saratoga County, and as WAMC’s Southern Adirondack Bureau Chief Lucas Willard reports, the moves are highlighting divides within county government.
The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors held its organizational meeting for 2021 on Wednesday.
With a new year came the selection of a new county board chair, with a weighted majority of supervisors choosing Moreau Supervisor Todd Kusnierz, a Republican.
“Quite frankly, I think the Board of Supervisors were looking for someone who would effectively lead the county and I think that’s why my name was put forward,” said Kusnierz.

While it pales in comparison to the events in Washington Wednesday, there is controversy in Saratoga County as the Board of Supervisors has broken with tradition to elect a new chairperson.
On Wednesday, Theodore Todd Kusnierz was chosen to lead the board, bypassing Greenfield Supervisor Dan Pemrick, who was chair of the county’s Law and Finance Committee and the heir apparent to the chairmanship.
Kusnierz is part of the coalition of Northway towns who were unhappy about the county’s pandemic hazard pay.

SARATOGA COUNTY Someone with nearly a decade of experience inside Saratoga County government has been named the county’s new public works commissioner.
The county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday named Chad Cooke, who is currently the deputy county administrator, as commissioner of public works effective Jan. 8 but it happened in a way that showed the political divisions within the county board.
The appointment was originally anticipated to take effect on Jan. 1, but a coalition of supervisors representing the county’s larger towns pushed through the postponement until Jan. 8 over the objections of the smaller towns.
