The deadline for entries has been extended until Monday 17 May meaning there’s two more weeks to submit your lovely loaves across the six categories – Gluten-free, Innovation, Plain Sourdough, Sourdough with Other Ingredients, White and Wholemeal. Winners in each category will battle it out for the ultimate title of Britain’s Best Loaf. Taking place on Monday 5 July 2021 at the Birmingham NEC the event, sponsored by ADM and Food Paper, will see a panel of expert judges assess every loaf on its external appearance, internal structure, aroma and taste. Those in the Innovation category will also be scored on their uniqueness.

Here, dozens of loaves compete in six categories for the ultimate title of Britain’s Best Loaf as they are individually scored on external appearance, internal structure, aroma, and taste. This is no easy task, but British Baker has rounded up a team of industry experts to ensure that Britain’s Best Loaf truly lives up to its name. There are well-known and respected faces, former champions and scientific specialists among the ranks with centuries’ worth of collective experience in the baking world.

Inspiration comes from everywhere (including right outside the bakery door) Example: Wild Hops & Barley Loaf, Peter Cooks Bread Award: Britain’s Best Loaf 2021 The winning Wild Hops & Barley Loaf What made it stand out? This unique, limited edition loaf wowed the judges at the 2020 competition for its innovative use of local ingredients, utilisation of by-products from other food and drink processes and its great look, structure, aroma, and taste. The inspiration for the loaf came from the field of hops found about 50 yards from the bakery door. These were used to create a tea which was then combined with Shipton Mill No. 4 Strong White Flour to make a sourdough starter. Further local ingredients were added in the form of spent grains from The Hop Shed, a nearby micro-brewery.

A BAKERY has achieved a prestigious industry accolade for one its handmade loaves. Seasons Bakery in Ingleton earned the Baking Industry Awards 2020’s ‘Innovation of the Year’ for its unique Sourdough Toastie Loaf during an online ceremony hosted by TV and radio star Alexander Armstrong. Seasons were also runners up in the Baker of the Year and Bakery Manufacturer of the Year categories. Bakery owner Dan Nemeth said he and his staff were overjoyed. “The award is a great reflection on the devotion of the bakery staff, who have worked above and beyond the call of duty over the last year, not only on this but also on a great number of projects due to the coronavirus pandemic,” he said.
