The musician, who was born in Methlick, takes over the post at the Aberdeen institution from businessman Sir Ian Wood, who is stepping down after 16 years in July. Dame Evelyn, who received an honorary doctor of music degree from RGU in 2016, will play an ambassadorial role in helping to raise the university’s profile at home and abroad. She said: “I am honoured to join Robert Gordon University, the Scottish University of The Year, as its Chancellor. It has been my life’s mission to widen access to music and use it as a medium to build social cohesion. I also know that listening is the key to inclusion and collaboration.

University appoints world-famous Scots percussionist as new chancellor Robert Gordon University has appointed an internationally acclaimed Scots solo percussionist and double GRAMMY award-winner as its new chancellor. Dame Evelyn Glennie CH, who received an Honorary Doctor of Music Degree from RGU in 2016, will step into the role in July, replacing Sir Ian Wood after 16 years as titular head of the institution.
