Eating Disorders Awareness Week: A Crisis in the Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa Walter H. Kaye, MD, Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine. At some point in their lives, nearly 28.8 million Americans will have an eating disorder, such as anorexia nervosa, the most lethal of psychiatric disorders after opioid overdose. Anorexia nervosa frequently requires prolonged hospitalization for weight restoration and medical stabilization. Altogether, treating eating disorders cost the United States more than $65 billion annually. More than 10,000 Americans die each year as a direct result of an eating disorder.   “We are facing a crisis in the treatment of anorexia nervosa, a debilitating, expensive, and frequently fatal illness,” write the authors of a viewpoint published in the February 24, 2021 online issue of JAMA Psychiatry.

Nearly 28.8 million Americans will experience an eating disorder in their life. Prolonged hospitalization and weight restoration is often necessary for treatment, totaling $65 billion annually in the United States and costing 10,000 Americans lives each year. “Anorexia nervosa has the highest rate of death of any psychiatric illness. We are now beginning to understand why people develop these disorders, and we are using this information to develop more effective treatment,” said Walter H. Kaye, MD, who joined KUSI to stress the importance of treating this illness. A task force from the Academy for Eating Disorders, spearheaded by Walter H. Kaye, MD, Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, and Cynthia M. Bulik, PhD, Distinguised Professor of Psychiatry at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, have called for urgency in treating patients with anorexia nervosa in the U.S.

Bulik, PhD, Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and composed of senior clinicians and researchers from university and nonprofit eating disorder treatment centers throughout the United States, is issuing a call for immediate action to address “The Treatment of Patients With Anorexia Nervosa in the US – A Crisis in Care.”
