Mental health advocates slam inhumane Slater Hospital discharges

CRANSTON  The continuing discharges of Eleanor Slater Hospital patients, many to circumstances relatives and guardians describe as inadequate for their needs, is drawing mounting criticism from disability and mental-health advocates and highlighting, yet again, long-standing deficiencies in a state system that decades ago was hailed as a national leader. “The state has not invested in the full continuum of behavioral health care, and we are left with a dilapidated, broken, insufficient system,” Laurie-Marie Pisciotta, executive director of the Mental Health Association of Rhode Island, said on Monday in calling for a moratorium on disputed patient discharges. “The system really needs a redesign from the bottom up, carefully ensuring adequate resources to meet the needs people have now,” James McNulty, executive director of Providence-based Oasis Wellness & Recovery Centers, told The Journal.
