Rebecca Ryan finds out how Tourism Waitaki is using social media to its advantage and what the most “Instagrammable” spots in the district are.
Have you ever seen someone’s travel photo on Instagram and been inspired to go there?
Posts about travel on social media are dramatically affecting people’s decision-making about the experiences they choose to have – and a destination’s “Instagrammability” is now a major driver of its attractiveness.
Due to international travel restrictions, there has been a much bigger focus on New Zealanders exploring their own backyard and heading off the beaten track this summer, which has also resulted in a shift in the popular destinations for Instagrammers.

The sunflowers near Weston are in full bloom, and are attracting more than just birds.
Owners Peter and Sandra Mitchell said the flowers generated a lot of interest from the public and it was not uncommon for people to stop and take pictures.
Although the couple did not mind visitors enjoying the flowers, it was an issue when people entered the field, and took or knocked over flowers.

Waitaki flood recovery cost expected to be into the six figures

The Waitaki District Council is expecting at least a six-figure sum for its flood recovery expenses, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher says.
The district was hampered by last week s rainfall, and while the council had not received any official figures, it would be certainly quite appreciable . It will be into the six figures NZTA s cost alone is probably $200,000 or $300,000, Kircher said.
