A comprehensive plan to expand public lakefront access and connect the 30 miles of Lake Erie shoreline that spans Cuyahoga County inevitably depends on the approximately 3,800 privately owned parcels that comprise about 18.6 miles of that stretch.

LAKEWOOD, Ohio City Council recently agreed to a land lease with lakefront property owners looking to protect their land from continued Lake Erie erosion.
City Engineer Mark K. Papke said the land lease covers 6,000 square feet into Lake Erie for two next-door neighbors seeking to install riprap erosion protection.
“According to ODNR permitting, they have to get a resolution from the city basically stating that land was free and clear and able to be used for erosion protection,” Papke said.
“They’re making sure that the city doesn’t have any interest in that land for any of our projects if we had any infrastructure there. It’s like a checks and balances making sure that the city is OK with them getting a submerged land lease for that area.”
