Alongside david hockney, 60 years ago, but he never reached the same level of prominence and acclaim, despite being regarded as highly influential in his own right. He was born in guyana in south america, but moved to britain as a teenager. Now at the age of 85, his first major exhibition has opened at tate britain in london.
