BANGKOK, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Thailand’s government defended its coronavirus vaccine strategy on Tuesday against opposition criticism that it is too reliant on a company owned by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.
The attack by banned opposition politician Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit came as Thailand battles its biggest rise in infections and after months of youth-led protests that brought a rare challenge to the monarchy. Criticising the royal family is illegal.
“These baseless and inaccurate accusations shouldn’t be linked to the work of the institution we revere and love,” said Nakorn Premsri, director of the National Vaccine Institute, referring to the monarchy.

The Crime Suppression Division (CSD) will summon Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit s mother for questioning in connection with bribes given to an official at the Crown Property Bureau (CPB).
Mr Thanathorn is the former leader of the disbanded Future Forward Party and co-founder of the Progressive Movement.
Pheu Thai Party MP and chairman of a House Committee on legal affairs, justice and human rights, Chaiyan Phonsuwan, said the panel met on Wednesday to consider a complaint from former Democrat MP Watchara Phetthong about prosecutors deciding not to indict Thanathorn s brother, Sakulthorn Juangroongruangkit, who is CEO of the Real Estate Development Company in the Chit Lom land lease case.

Thailand’s vaccination programme will not be complete until the end of 2022 says Health Minister Anutin
A Super Poll survey in recent days shows the public firmly behind the government and in stout agreement with the legal action being taken against the Progressive Movement leader who is still defending his controversial claims that the country’s vaccination plans are flawed and too reliant on the AstraZeneca vaccine including its deal here with a firm owned by the Crown Property Bureau, a claim which last week produced a forceful and angry response from officials starting with the Prime Minister.
As the controversy over Thailand’s vaccination strategy against Covid-19 rages with Lèse-majesté proceedings being taken against Progressive Movement leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, the Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul has suggested that the programme will not be complete until the end of 2022.
Thai king is a headache for Germany The regime is clearly trying to send a strong signal that the dissent towards the monarchy we saw in 2020 has gone far enough and will no longer be tolerated, said Buchanan, adding that applying the lese majeste laws is a double-edged sword for Thailand s establishment, as it may cause more people to support reforming the role of the monarchy. That s why it was suspended for a few years. So, reaching for it now is a sign of desperation. It shows that the regime has run out of ideas on how to handle the monarchy s legitimacy crisis, Buchanan added.
