welcome to the lead. i m jake tapper in washington, d.c. for 70 years her subjects and her fans have been saying, god save the queen but this afternoon, queen elizabeth ii, longest ruling monarch in british history died at the age of 96. the royal family confirmed the news just about 90 minutes ago saying that the queen died peacefully at balmoral castle in scotland. moments ago her son charles, now king charles iii released a statement saying in part, we mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished, sovereign and a much-loved mother. he loss will be deeply felt by countless people around the worlds. we expect king charles to make an address tomorrow. moments after the official announcement this afternoono afternoon the flag over buckingham palace was lowered to half-staff. a similar scene unfolding at the queen s other homes including windsor castle. the official notice was posted on the gates of buckingham palace reading, the queen died peacefully at balmoral this aft
we begin with sunlen who is outside the supreme court. what are you seeing? reporter: jim, it certainly is a very tense moment right here on the steps of the supreme court. i want to show you the scene playing out now at this moment. i ll take you to the crowd here in the last few minutes we ve seen really this conversation between both sides break out. the police have moved in some barricades, some police fences and they have separated the two sides. over here you have a side who is not in support of friday s supreme court decision and over here pro-life and we have seen them yelling back and forth. i want to just give you a flavor of the crowd at the moment out here on the steps of the supreme court. abort the court. abort the court. reporter: although they are vocal and loud and are certainly taking issue with each other we have seen these protests remain largely peaceful throughout the day, jim. we are seeing this crowd swell in size a couple hundred out here tod
largely peaceful throughout the day, jim. we are seeing this crowd swell in size a couple hundred out here today. it has been sustained throughout the afternoon and we anticipate that for the evening we are seeing families come out, mothers with their children come out, people who say they want to come out to witness history and certainly make their voice heard with what happened at the supreme court on friday. a lot of people saying there s not much organization, they re perplexed what to do, that people want to show up and let their voice be heard but beyond that questioning what way the country is going. we have heard that from women and a lot of men protesting as well. back to you, jim. all right, very tense swigs there, sunlen. out there in los angeles, what are you seeing on your end? reporter: the third day of protests in the downtown los angeles area. while the crowd is smaller than
all of these topics i expect elizabeth warren to keep talking about. again, it is what is made what has made her crowd swell. back here she has a pretty good crowd in this black town, not a black town, an hbcu. that is one of the things she is trying to do obviously is attract african-american voters. about two-thirds of the voters in this primary state. as you can see not a lot of african-american voters in this crowd. today she has to do better with those voters if she is going to remain competitive. you see her doing obviously really well in national polls when it comes to south carolina she has not been doing too well. that is part of the goal of this event to connect with those voters as well. okay. rock hill, south carolina. we know you ll bring us any highlights from her event today. thanks so much. congress has been down the impeachment road before. most recently of course with president bill clinton. so what happened in that case? which divided washington more than 20 ye
